Is a pet bird a good idea for my son? | Pet Expert

Question by mom_of_2: Is a pet bird a good idea for my son?
My son is 7 and he has ADD and allergies. His teacher has birds in the classroom, and he has become VERY attached. He has grown to love these birds. They are VERY useful in his ability to complete assignments, stay on task, etc. Should i try to get him a pet bird? If so what type? I am worried about dander. Also, if he has a bird at home will the ones at school still be as helpful?
we already have a dog, and he is good with him, but he cant cuddle the dog the way he wants. the dog is too hyper ?.Dashound terrior mix.

My son too has ADD, we got him a dog. It worked wonders, he also has mild autism, and it has been a great tool for him. I?d say go for it. Start with parakeets, you usually buy them in pairs, as they are social. They will not reproduce if you do not give them a nest, so dont worry about that. They are fairly low maintenance as far as birds go, and not very costly. As far as dander, as long as you clean their cage and vacuum up any stray feathers, and use a mite protector on their cage, it should not be an issue. Mite protectors are small round metal boxes with special powder in them to deter mites. Very inexspensive, available in the bird section of any pet store. Good luck to you and your son.
