In lab, Pannexin1 restores tight binding of cells that is lost in cancer

Monday, January 30, 2012

First there is the tumor and then there's the horrible question of whether the cancerous cells will spread. Scientists increasingly believe that the structural properties of the tumor itself, such as how tightly the tumor cells are packed together, play a decisive role in the progression of the disease. In a new study, researchers show that the protein Pannexin1, known to have tumor-suppressive properties, plays an important role in keeping the cells within a tissue closely packed together, an effect that may be lost with cancer.

"In healthy tissues, the recently discovered protein Pannexin1 may be playing an important role in upholding the mechanical integrity of the tissue," said first author and Brown University M.D./Ph.D. student Brian Bao. "When we develop cancer, we lose Pannexin1 and we lose this integrity."

The results appeared in advance online in the Journal of Biological Chemistry on Jan. 20.

To conduct their research, the group at Brown University and the University of British Columbia employed a "3-D Petri dish" technology that allows investigators to watch closely how cells interact with each other, without scientists having to worry about additional interactions with surrounding scaffolding or the culture plate itself. How readily the cells form large multicellular structures therefore reflects their interactions with each other, not their in vitro surroundings.

Bao's advisor, Jeffrey Morgan, associate professor of medical science, developed the 3-D Petri dish technology. Morgan is the paper's senior author.

Cancer cells converge

Starting with rat "C6" glioma (brain tumor) cells that do not express Pannexin1, the researchers left some unaltered and engineered others to express Pannexin1. After putting the different cells into the 3-D Petri dishes and watching them interact for 24 hours, they saw that the Pannexin1 cells were able to form large multicellular tissues much faster and more tightly than the unaltered cancer cells.

To confirm that Pannexin1 was indeed causing these changes, Bao and his colleagues treated their samples with the drugs Probenecid and Carbenoxolone, which are well known inhibitors of Pannexin1. They saw that sure enough, the drugs negated Pannexin1's accelerating effect.

Then the team was ready to achieve the the study's main aim, Bao said, namely to determine how Pannexin1 was able to drive these cells to clump together faster and tighter. They found that Pannexin1 sets off a chain reaction involving the energy-carrying molecule ATP and specific receptors for it.

When all experiments were done, Bao, Morgan, and their collaborators had found that as soon as the cells touched each other, Pannexin1 channels were stimulated to open and release ATP. The ATP then bound to cell surface receptors, kicking off intracellular calcium waves that ultimately remodeled the network of a structural protein called actin. This remodeling increases the forces between the cells, driving them to bind together more tightly.

Figuring out that sequence, and Pannexin1's role in it, is perhaps the study's biggest contribution to cancer research, Bao said.

"Using their single-cell systems, others have been able to carefully study individual pieces of this cascade," he said. "We came from a different perspective. Because the strength of our assay is that we can look at gross multicellular behavior in 3-D, we could ask, 'Does this actually manifest into something tangible on the multicellular level?'"

Having gained this understanding of Pannexin1's role in the mechanics of tumors, Bao is now engaged in research to answer the obvious next questions: Does Pannexin1 affect the tumor's ability to spread and invade? When cancerous cells regain Pannexin1 expression, are they less likely to spread and leave the tumor?

Could Florida Be the Knockout Blow for Gingrich? (ContributorNetwork)

In this race for the Republican Party's nomination, things seem to be continuously turning on a dime. Mitt Romney, the well-established front-runner going into the campaign, has been trading the lead with a series of candidates for months now. His most recent -- and likely last -- sparring partner for the nomination is Newt Gingrich, who earlier this month sprinted back into the lead with a solid victory in the South Carolina primary.

But following a strong debate performance last week in Jacksonville, Fla., Romney appears to be taking a commanding lead in Florida polls.

What are the latest polls in Florida indicating?

According to a Rasmussen Reports poll released Sunday, Romney has built a big lead going into Tuesday's primary. The poll, which was conducted Saturday, shows a 16-point lead for Romney. He has 44 percent, while Gingrich is a distance second with 28 percent. Rick Santorum is third with 12 percent and Ron Paul is bringing up the rear with 10 percent. Five percent of respondents were unsure of who they would vote for when they were asked.

A Public Policy Polling survey, which was also conducted Saturday, gave Romney a slimmer lead, 40 percent to 32 percent, over Gingrich. Santorum comes in with 15 percent and Paul has 9 percent of the vote in the poll.

How are the candidates doing nationally?

Given the fact the nomination process involves individual state primaries and caucuses, national polling doesn't hold the same level of importance as each state poll does. That said, there is some hope for Gingrich in a recent national Gallup poll conducted late last week showing he has maintained the gains he has made over Romney following the South Carolina primary. Santorum and Paul remain far down in the poll, as they do in most state polls as well.

After Florida, what will the future hold for the Republican candidates?

The nomination process will speed up. Nevada, Maine, Minnesota and Colorado will vote during the first week in February, with more states to follow later in the month. The race already seems to be down to two candidates -- Romney and Gingrich -- who can realistically win. But Paul has vowed to stay in the race no matter what, and his strategy for collecting delegates in caucus states could prove menacing for Romney and Gingrich.

Santorum's campaign has been stalled since his surprise victory in Iowa. Even if he maintains the funding that he needs to continue into February he shows no signs of gaining traction among voters. The probability that he would drop out of the race by early February, if not sooner, would seem to be high at this point.

By Keith Caulfield, The Hollywood Reporter

Al Green's "Let's Stay Together" got a sales boost last week from an unlikely source -- President Barack Obama.

Obama's Al Green 'Lets Stay Together' Video Goes Viral (Video)?

A video of the president singing the first line of the song at a Jan. 19 fundraising event went viral the next day, sparking a 490 percent weekly sales increase for the song. It sold 16,000 downloads in the week ending Jan. 22 according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Nadal beats Federer in Australian Open semifinal (AP)

MELBOURNE, Australia ? Rafael Nadal beat Roger Federer 6-7 (5), 6-2, 7-6 (5), 6-4 in an Australian Open semifinal on Thursday night, the longtime rivals playing with the intensity they normally display when they meet in Grand Slam finals.

Though the stars who have met in eight Grand Slam finals were on the same side of the draw for the first time at a major since 2005, they played as if the title were at stake.

This time, though, only Nadal will have the opportunity to win another championship ? on Sunday night when the Spanish left-hander plays the winner of Friday's semifinal between defending champion Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) ? Maria Sharapova overcame Petra Kvitova to set up a women's final against Victoria Azarenka at the Australian Open before the attention quickly shifted to a much anticipated semifinal showdown between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.

Sharapova broke Kvitova's serve in the last game to finish off a 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 Thursday, and third-seeded Azarenka beat defending champion Kim Clijsters 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 to set up a Saturday night final at Rod Laver Arena that also will decide the No. 1 ranking.

Sharapova lost to second-ranked Kvitova in the Wimbledon final last year, her first major final since returning from an injury layoff following a shoulder operation in 2008. She has won three majors, but none since the Australian four years ago.

"In the third set, I felt she always had the advantage because I was always down on my serve," said Sharapova, who served five double-faults in the third set and 10 in the match. "I just told myself 'You just gotta go for it, don't let her finish off the points like she likes to.'"

Azarenka won the first semifinal after twice recovering from periods when a resurgent Clijsters seemed to have the upper hand, to secure victory in only her second appearance in a major semifinal.

"I felt like my hand is about 200 kilograms and my body is about 1,000 and everything is shaking, but that feeling when you finally win is such a relief. My God I cannot believe it's over. I just want to cry," Azarenka said as she choked back tears, then buried her face in a towel.

"It was just trying to stay in the moment. Kim really took over the second set and I felt there was nothing I could do. I just tried to regroup."

Clijsters is popular in Australia, where she's widely known as "Aussie Kim." She had most of the backing from the crowd on the national holiday in what is likely to be her last Australian Open.

Azarenka held her nerve despite the crowd and the fact she was up against a proven big-match player. Clijsters has won four majors and has defended a Grand Slam title ? winning the U.S. Open in 2009 and '10. To reach the semifinals, the Belgian saved four match points despite a sprained ankle to beat French Open champion Li Na in the fourth round and then beat top-ranked Caroline Wozniacki in the quarterfinals.

"I guess before you all thought I was a mental case," Azarenka said in a courtside interview. "I was just young and emotional. I'm really glad the way I fight, that's the most thing I'm really proud of. I fight for every ball."

Clijsters credited Azarenka with increasing maturity.

"The match was very close. There were a few deciding moments where I think I maybe had a little bit of an advantage, in the third set, especially that first game where I had break point," Clijsters said. "But she definitely played really well. So she deserved to win at the end."

Wozniacki will vacate top spot in next week's rankings after her quarterfinal loss, leaving either No. 3 Azarenka and No. 4 Sharapova to move to the top.

The top men's ranking won't be at issue Thursday night. Novak Djokovic ? who plays Andy Murray in another semifinal on Friday ? has that locked up regardless of the Australian Open results.

But the Nadal-Federer semifinal will mark the first time since the French Open in 2005 that the pair have met at the next-to-last stage of any Grand Slam. Federer and Nadal were Nos. 1 and 2 for most of five years from 2005 to 2010, meaning they were on opposite sides of the draw and could not meet until the final.

That changed at this tournament when No. 2 Nadal and No. 3 Federer both ended up in the bottom half of the draw. Five matches later, the players with 26 Grand Slam singles titles between them ? Federer 16, Nadal 10 ? will meet.

Nadal has won 17 of their 26 head-to-head matches overall, including a 7-2 lead in Grand Slam matches. Federer won the last meeting, a 60-minute 6-3, 6-0 victory at the season-ending championship in November.

"We have been on opposite sides of the draw many times," Federer said. "I guess it's a nice change-up. OK, it doesn't allow a rematch for the Australian Open final here, you know, but I think it's good for tennis that it changes up a bit."

Motor insurance ? What exactly is Culpability And Wreck Insurance ...

Tuesday, January 24th, 2012 at 8:42 pm ?

You recognize 100 % well that it?s the law, but you?ve been driving around without motor insurance for a time now. Why? Car insurance policy is of supreme relevance to any drivers, however beneficial you consider you?re. Injuries transpire, that?s the truth, and you need to be shielded in case it will. Not every car insurance is identical, nevertheless, and you will become a minor puzzled regarding concepts.

The earliest name to consider is the liability automobile insurance. This addresses you against statements arising from an accident wherever there?s real injury or property damage. Usually, there are actually about three major areas of any the liability car insurance: bodily harm liability, liability for property damage, and uninsured insurance. The first type of insurance policy coverage shields you in the matter of an accident, that you have reached problem, and the like have already been harmed. Your culpability car insurance organization can pay any legitimate says for professional medical charges or lost pay. If you?ve come across someone?s retaining wall, or perhaps the section of the home, you?ll will need legal responsibility insurance plan for house injury, which will pay for vehicle repairs. From the example where you stand not always liable plus the other motorist won?t have legal responsibility automobile insurance, you might be secured by without insurance, or within-covered, autos insurance coverage.

Culpability auto insurance is totally different from crash car insurance policy. As we discussed, nothing at all was mentioned about repairing your auto inside the previously mentioned information. That?s for the reason that it?s not included under a very simple responsibility car insurance policy. You?ll want accident motor insurance, except in cases where you?re happy to pay of your pants pocket. Wreck automobile insurance protects vehicle repairs for a car or truck when it comes to, you suspected it, a accident with a further subject. If you?re among those folks who gets their sneakers by going around very poor, defenseless family pets, this protection isn?t for you. You?ll need comprehensive car insurance to repair that chipped front lights.

Normally, you possibly can opt for you?re deductible charge, i.age., the exact amount that the automobile insurance business will pay over to repair your car or truck. Typically, the larger the deductible, the bottom the auto insurance plan advanced. You will definitely have to have wreck car insurance policy if you are rental a vehicle, should you unique a relatively new car or if you?re paying to the money corporation. People who just love much older cars and trucks may choose to bypass this form of auto insurance altogether. But if your car or truck is wrecked, your car insurance carrier pays off you that rate within your vehicle, a minimum of property value your insurance deductible. If you can to absorb the price of exchanging your vehicle yourself, you might like to ditch this.

French brand Courreges takes retro fashion online (Reuters)

PARIS (Reuters) ? Courreges, the futuristic fashion brand of the 1960s, is poised to bring its vinyl boots and A-line mini-dresses back into vogue, relaunching the French name online.

A year after the brand was sold for more than 10 million euros ($13.05 million) to two directors from advertising agency Young & Rubicam, Jacques Bungert and Frederic Torloting, Courreges is now also aiming to expand its perfume business.

The simple shapes and minimalist black and white palette of the couturier Andre Courreges -- a protege of Balenciaga -- had their heydey in the 1960s and 70s, rivaling Chanel and Dior, before being sold to Japanese investors in the 1980s.

A decade later Courreges and his wife Coqueline bought back the brand but it largely disappeared from sight before the purchase by Bungert and Torloting in January 2011.

"We're hoping that the brand returns, in five to 10 years, to its former stature as a global brand with its dimension of innovation that earlier made its success," Bungert told Reuters.

"When the feeling of a brand is respected, it can be reborn without losing its integrity," he added.

Currently, Courreges clothes and accessories are sold at its Paris boutique in the posh Eighth Arrondissement, where sales have risen 40 percent in a year, Bungert said. Total revenue for the brand is now about 20 million, the executives said.

Internet sales begin February 1, and women will be able to shop online for nearly all the clothes and accessories currently sold in the boutique.

Torloting said Courreges' design lends itself well to online sales, as the brand does not use the kind of delicate fabrics that could get damaged in transit.

As for perfume, Courreges' "Empreinte" and "Eau de Courreges," currently sold only in the boutique, will now be distributed more widely, and a publicity campaign, the first since 1996, is planned.

As Paris Fashion Week launched Monday with its bi-annual Haute Couture shows, Torloting said he has no intention of parading twice-yearly collections on the catwalk at the industry's fashion weeks.

Founder Andre Courreges refused to use celebrities to promote his swinging sixties styles, claiming designs such as his 1964 "Space Age" collection were created for the "ordinary woman."

"The idea of creating collections that push each other out is not very modern in our view," Torloting told Reuters.

"We don't want to manufacture our own obsolescence," he said.

Gabrielle Giffords' Resignation Sparks Special Election (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz., has announced her resignation from her congressional seat to focus full time on her rehabilitation from injuries brought on by a gunshot wound to the inflicted over a year ago, according to CNN.

The resignation has sparked a special election for her seat, with a primary to take place in April, according to the National Journal, with a general election between the Democrat and Republican winners in June. While the redrawn 8th District is slightly more Democratic, since the special election is being held to fill the remainder of Giffords' term, it will be held in the old district.

Candidates have not stepped forward, but Tucson News Now suggests there are a number on both sides of the aisle who might run. On the Republican side, State Senator Frank Atenori, Dave Sitton, a local sports broadcaster, Jesse Kelly, who ran against Giffords in 2010, and Adam Hanson are possibilities. Democrats include state legislators Paula Aboud, Steve Farley and Matt Heinz, as well as Giffords' chief of state Pia Carusone and state director Ron Barber.

While the old 8th District leans Republican, Giffords won re-election of 2010 despite that contest being a Republican wave election. Because of her public struggle to recover from the shooting, Giffords remains extremely popular in her home district. It is uncertain whether that popularity would translate to a Democratic candidate.

The Republicans running for the seat will have to be very careful how they campaign. Giffords is untouchable. How the winner of the Republican primary campaigns will depend on who the Democrats choose in their contest. Likely both candidates will present themselves as a bipartisan, reach across the aisle politician that Giffords presented herself as in her own campaigns.

How to deal with issues like Obamacare will be a delicate question as well. Giffords was for it, but her constituents are against it. Health care as an issue touches on Giffords' rehab struggle.

Of course an endorsement from Giffords would likely seal the deal and retain her district in her party's column. Very likely, therefore, national Republicans will not view the special election as a high priority,

Physicists use ion beams to detect art forgery

Saturday, January 21, 2012

University of Notre Dame nuclear physicists Philippe Collon and Michael Wiescher are using accelerated ion beams to pinpoint the age and origin of material used in pottery, painting, metalwork and other art. The results of their tests can serve as powerful forensic tools to reveal counterfeit art work, without the destruction of any sample as required in some chemical analysis.

Their research is featured on the front cover of the current issue of Physics Today in an article titled, "Accelerated ion beams for art forensics." Wiescher and Collon say, "Art experts play an important role in identifying the style, history and context of a painting, but a solid scientific basis for the proper identification and classification of a piece of art must rely on information from other sources.

"A host of approaches with origins in biology, chemistry and physics have allowed scientists and art historians not only to look below a painting's or artifact's surface, but also to analyze in detail the pigments used, investigate painting techniques and modifications done by the artist or art restorers, find trace materials that reveal ages and provenances, and more," Wiescher and Collon continue.

The information that is revealed can shed light on trading patterns, economic conditions and other details of history. For example, the amount of silver in Roman coins can indicate the degree of inflation in the ancient economy.

Laboratories in Europe, including several in Italy and one in the basement of the Louvre in Paris, have accelerators dedicated to the forensic analysis of art, and archaeological artifacts. These accelerator-based techniques have allowed not only to analyze the works themselves, but also to determine origin, trade and migration routes as well as dietary information. As an example, the analysis of the ruby eyes in a Babylonian statue of the goddess Ishtar using the Louvre's accelerator showed that the rubies came from a mine in Vietnam, demonstrating that trade occurred between those far-apart regions some 4,000 years ago.

At Notre Dame, researchers are using proton-induced x-ray emission (PIXE) and Accelerator Mass Spectroscopy (AMS) to study artifacts brought by local archeologists, Native American cultures in the American Southwest and the Snite Museum of Art extensive collection of Mezzo-American figurines.

Wiescher, the Frank M. Freimann Professor of Physics, and Collon, associate professor of physics, are using their findings to teach undergraduates. Wiescher initially developed the undergraduate physics class called Physical Methods in Art and Archaeology, and now Collon teaches the class which attracts students from nearly every major. The course covers topics such as X-ray fluorescence and X-ray absorption, proton-induced X-ray emission, neutron-induced activation analysis, radiocarbon dating, accelerator mass spectroscopy, luminescence dating, and methods of archeometry.

Sony dashes Dash development: is Bieber's favorite tablet on the way out?

The towering cultural colossus that is Justin Bieber giveth, yet he must also taketh away. Merely days after appearing as the pitchman for dancing crotch-speaker robot Tosy mRobo, the last tech-product he was tasked with selling might have been quietly put to sleep behind Sony's barn. The Dash was a pseudo-tablet powered by Chumby OS that, perhaps inexplicably, never caught on, angering the floppy-haired Canadian infant. A developer who was signed up to produce apps for the platform received the following email from Sony's HQ, which subsequently appeared on the Dash Developer's website:

Beginning February 29th, 2012, the Sony Dash developer website will close and no longer support development of new applications. This closure includes the Dash developer forum and Dash developer support, which will close on March 31st. Sony Dash applications will remain available. Thank you for your contributions and we encourage you to continue your development activity on Sony's other platforms available at SonyDeveloper.com

Again, thank you very much,

Team Dash

There's been no official word (yet) if this is the end for the device, but it doesn't augur well for future revisions. If you'll excuse us, we're going to go pour one out for the beloved little, erm tablet-thing.

Nev. GOP may change caucus date to avoid Sabbath

(AP) ? Nevada's Republican Party is considering moving the date of its presidential caucus for a third time after casino titan and Newt Gingrich supporter Sheldon Adelson raised concerns about the contest being held on the Jewish Sabbath.

GOP Chairwoman Amy Tarkanian told The Associated Press Thursday that the party could move its Feb. 4 Saturday morning caucus to accommodate roughly 500 conservative Jewish voters.

Tarkanian says the party has asked the Republican National Committee to weigh in on whether the contest should be pushed ahead to that Saturday night or on Feb. 2.

The announcement comes two days before the South Carolina primary on Saturday.

Nevada initially was scheduled to hold the nation's third presidential nomination contest, but party officials twice changed the caucus date last year.

Josh Hutcherson And Vanessa Hudgens: Most Awkward Interview Ever?

The Hunger Games isn't the only movie actor Josh Hutcherson is promoting right now: The 19-year-old is currently in Australia with co-star Vanessa Hudgens for the premiere of their movie Journey 2: The Mysterious Island. The two stars made some time to do an interview with a Brisbane morning show while they were down under... and that's when things got awkward.

It was rumored that the young actors dated while on the set of the movie in July, but Vanessa Hudgens' current relationship with actor Austin Butler has been a high-profile (and PDA-plagued) news item for some time now.

So, when the interviewer asked how long Hutcherson and Hudgens had been going out, the two exes shared a shocked and awkward moment on screen.

Josh then responded:

"We?re not? We were at one point, but she broke my heart. No, I?m just kidding. That was a while ago. We?re really good friends now."

Watch the cringe-worthy Q&A go down in the video below at the 3:20 mark.

On the plus, Josh has been doing a ton of non-awkward interviews, lately, for his highly anticipated role as Peeta in The Hunger Games. Watch AOL's exclusive interview with the star, along with Liam Hemsworth, talking about its comparison to Twilight here.

So, tell us: Will you be seeing Journey 2: The Mysterious Island -- or will you hold out for The Hunger Games to see Josh in action? Sound off in the comments or tweet us @huffpostteen.

Paul gives new life to an old issue: gold standard

(AP) ? Facing double-digit inflation in 1981, Congress created a commission to consider a role for gold in U.S. monetary policy. The 17-member panel rejected the idea of returning America to the gold standard ? except for two dissenting members.

One was a little-known congressman from Texas named Ron Paul.

Today, Paul's surprisingly strong race for the Republican presidential nomination is drawing new attention to a notion that long has been a cherished cause for a small group of conservatives but is considered a relic of history by mainstream economists and politicians.

Paul and his supporters would like to set a firm value for the U.S. dollar, much like when it was pegged to a specific amount of gold. They say prices would be stable and inflation controlled because the government couldn't print more money than it had gold to back it up. This approach, Paul maintains, would address many of the economy's problems.

Other Republican candidates haven't joined him, though, and most experts dismiss the scheme as completely unfeasible in the modern global economy. For one thing, it would require most other countries to change their monetary systems. It would also preclude the ways that nations now manage the ups and downs of their economic cycles.

"Is it feasible to go back to something called 'the gold standard'? The answer is no," said Edwin Truman, senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics, who has written about gold and monetary policy. "The United States does not have the capacity to run such a system in the world today."

Still, talk about a gold standard, which the United States used in its early years but largely abandoned in 1933, shows how economic anxiety has fed a growing appeal for unusual remedies.

"People sense that there's something deeply wrong with the economy, so I think economic radicalism is much more popular than it has been in the past," said Jeffrey Bell, a GOP political consultant who helped Ronald Reagan record a campaign ad endorsing the gold standard in 1980. It never aired.

The Federal Reserve, America's central bank, sets interest rates to keep the economy, inflation and employment on a healthy track. Truman said the Fed has been reformed frequently and a key way to overhaul it today would be to restrict the assets it buys and sells.

"The Federal Reserve is not any different in its fundamental operations than any other central bank in the world," he said. "And, at the core, you'd still want what the Fed has, which is humans, policymakers, deciding how to set interest rates." An inability to loosen credit has been blamed by some economists for prolonging the Great Depression in the 1930s.

Paul calls for auditing ? and then ending ? the Federal Reserve. He argues that with gold backing the value of the dollar, the Fed would be obsolete and thus unable to play a role in creating credit bubbles that cause misery when they burst. He says the Fed made money too easily available in recent years.

"The gold coin standard, although imperfectly adhered to, permitted startling economic growth combined with falling prices in the 19th century," Paul wrote in his 1981 book "Gold, Peace and Prosperity: The Birth of a New Currency." ''In the 67 years since the abolition of the gold standard, the Consumer Price Index has gone up 625 percent. In the previous 67 years, under an imperfect gold coin standard, the CPI increased 10 percent."

The United States still allowed foreign nations to convert dollars into gold at a fixed rate of $35 an ounce through August 1971, when Richard Nixon closed the Treasury's "gold window." Paul says that's what inspired him to run for Congress.

Truman said going back is impossible: "It would drain all of our gold and we would go into huge deflation."

Mark Thoma, an economics professor at the University of Oregon who also has written on the gold standard, said there's not enough gold in the world to cover the value of global transactions and thus alleviate the need for paper money ? meaning governments would still want to float their currencies' value against gold.

David Schraeder, spokesman for the World Gold Council, an industry group that tracks gold bullion holdings, said the idea of setting a market value for gold can't be done unilaterally by the United States.

"You cannot have a gold standard with only one country participating," he said.

GOP candidates Newt Gingrich and Rick Perry both have called for firing Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke and reining in monetary policy, but neither has endorsed a new gold standard. They and other Republicans have avoided ridiculing the idea, however, and alienating its ardent believers.

"It's like poking a stick at a beehive," said Jonah Goldberg of the conservative American Enterprise Institute. "You're not going to get rid of them. You're just going to get them angry at you."

Iran says CIA behind nuclear scientist's killing (AP)

TEHRAN, Iran ? Iran said Saturday it has evidence that the United States was behind the assassination of an Iranian nuclear scientist this week in Tehran, state media reported.

Mostafa Ahmadi Roshan was killed in a brazen daylight assassination Wednesday when two assailants on a motorcycle attached a magnetic bomb to his car in the Iranian capital. The killing bore a strong resemblance to earlier killings of scientists working on the Iranian nuclear program, and has prompted calls in Iran for retaliation against those deemed responsible.

The IRNA state news agency said Saturday that Iran's Foreign Ministry has sent a diplomatic letter to the U.S. saying that it has "evidence and reliable information" that the CIA provided "guidance, support and planning" to assassins "directly involved" in Roshan's killing.

The U.S. has denied any role in the assassination.

Iran delivered the letter to the Swiss Embassy in Tehran, which looks after U.S. interests in the country. Iran and the U.S. have had no diplomatic relations since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

IRNA also reported that Iran delivered a letter to Britain accusing London of having an "obvious role" in the killing. It said that a series of assassinations began after British intelligence chief John Sawers hinted in 2010 at intelligence operations against the Islamic Republic.

British media have quoted Sawers as saying that intelligence-led operations were needed to make it more difficult for countries like Iran to develop nuclear weapons.

Britain's Foreign Office has condemned the killing of civilians. Israeli officials, in contrast, have hinted at covert campaigns against Iran without directly admitting involvement.

The killing has sparked outrage in Iran, and state TV broadcast footage Saturday of hundreds of students marching in Tehran to condemn Roshan's death and calling for the continuation of the country's disputed nuclear program.

The U.S. and its allies fear Iran's program aims to develop nuclear weapons. Iran denies the charges, and says its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only.

In the clearest sign yet that Iran is preparing to strike back for Roshan's killing, Gen. Masoud Jazayeri, the spokesman for Iran's Joint Armed Forces Staff, was quoted by the semiofficial ISNA news agency Saturday as saying that Tehran was "reviewing the punishment" of "behind-the-scene elements" involved in the assassination.

"Iran's response will be a tormenting one for supporters of state terrorism," he said, without elaborating. "The enemies of the Iranian nation, especially the United States, Britain and the Zionist regime, or Israel, have to be held responsible for their activities."

Jazayeri also accused the International Atomic Energy Agency of being partially to blame, saying that the U.N. nuclear watchdog made public a list of Iranian nuclear scientists and officials that "has provided the possibility of their identification and targeting by spy networks."

El Salvador offers pensions, care to ex-rebels (AP)

SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador ? Salvadoran President Mauricio Funes says an estimated 22,000 former rebel combatants now living in poverty will finally get long-overdue health care, pensions and other benefits.

The approximately $24.5-million program will give $50-per month pensions to survivors over 70 from the leftist Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front.

Funes ran on the ticket of the front, which turned into a political party following 1992 peace accords that ended the 12-year civil war. Funes did not fight.

Army soldiers who fought the rebels have pensions. About 25,000 rebel fighters are still alive and 87 percent live in poverty. Funes spoke Friday at a gathering of rebel veterans days before the Jan. 16 anniversary of the war's end.
