Teresa Giudice to Real Housewives of New Jersey Castmates: Sorry!!!

You know what they say about apologies: they aren't sincere unless you make six figures off publishing them in a supermarket tabloid.

Teresa Giudice has taken this saying to heart and penned an open letter to her Real Housewives of New Jersey castmates. It's included in the latest issue of In Touch Weekly and, in addressing Jacqueline, Melissa, Kathy and Caroline, it reads:

"I wish I could take it all back and start over."

Teresa Giudice on In Touch Weekly Cover

On last Sunday's season four premiere - which drew record ratings for Bravo - Giudice dissed and also dismissed Gorga, her sister-in-law, saying she'd leave husband Joe in a heartbeat for a richer man.

Melissa lashed out in response, saying she was hurt by Teresa's comments and they simply aren't valid.

Meanwhile, Giudice is also engaged in a few with Jacqueline, to whom she writes:

"Dear Jacqueline, I wish we could have resolved things sooner because I’m sincerely sorry for upsetting you - and I’m sorry I didn’t respond to your apology on Twitter. I feel like things have gotten out of hand, which is sad. I miss our friendship. I miss being like Lucy and Ethel with you. And so I hope we can work through these problems one day, when you are ready. Teresa xoxo"

Should the ladies accept Teresa's apology? They just need to pick up the In Touch and decide whether or not they buy it. That's how friendship typically works, right?

Wal-Mart previews 'Disc to Digital' movie service

A "Walmart Entertainment" stamp in indelible ink has been placed on a disc, preventing any further conversion, but allowing it to still be played, at a Wal-Mart store in Rosemead, Calif., Wednesday, April 11, 2012. Wal-Mart is set to unveil its "disc-to-digital" service for converting old DVDs into an online library that is available over the Internet. The fee it will charge per disc is meant to cover the cost of hosting and delivering reams of movie files to various devices. ROSEMEAD, Calif. (AP) ? Wal-Mart Stores Inc. previewed its "Disc to Digital" service for converting DVDs into an online library on Wednesday. Based on my experience, I'd give it a six out of 10.

That's the number of discs I was able to convert from a completely unscientific sampling of my personal DVD library.

The new service allows movie fans to walk into any Walmart, where they can present their old DVDs and get permanent access to an online version of each movie that can be streamed from a home computer or a mobile device. The DVDs are stamped with a special ink to prevent further conversion. The DVDs, however, can still be played. Each DVD conversion costs as little as $2.

Three of my four failed conversions were no surprise ? two were obscure documentaries, and one was a film from The Walt Disney Co., which is not participating in the service. One was a bit puzzling: "Water for Elephants," a fairly successful romance released last year by 20th Century Fox, one of the studios that is partnering with Wal-Mart.

Wal-Mart's category director for movies, Louis Greth, said the retailer hasn't yet cleared the rights for all the titles from participating studios. That will result in some titles not being available. Some actors and directors have not agreed to sign over digital rights to movies they took part in. In the case of director George Lucas, that includes all six "Star Wars" movies.

Fox confirmed that the digital rights for "Water for Elephants" have not been cleared.

Still, with 4,000 titles available for digital conversion when the service launches nationwide on Monday, the retailer hopes to give U.S. customers another reason to come into stores. Wal-Mart also wants to take part in the shift in the way people watch movies. More and more people are choosing to watch on portable devices like Apple's iPad, and allowing people to convert their DVD libraries is seen as an important bridge to a fully portable age.

Greth called the plan "the right first step" to ease consumers into owning movies online.

Five major studios are participating in the service, which gives consumers permanent access to their movies through Wal-Mart's Vudu online movie service.

Customers must bring in the physical discs themselves and an employee will search a database to see if they are available. For $5 per disc, movies can be upgraded from DVD to a high-definition online version. Blu-ray discs converted to HD will still cost $2 each. Each disc that gets converted gets stamped with indelible ink so it can't be reused by someone else.

Vudu can be accessed through computers, Internet-connected TVs, video game consoles and by way of a special player available on iPads and iPhones. Access requires a hard-wired Internet connection or Wi-Fi.

Participating studios include Viacom Inc.'s Paramount, Comcast Corp.'s Universal, Sony Corp., Time Warner Inc.'s Warner Bros. and News Corp.'s 20th Century Fox.

The Walt Disney Co. is developing its own online storage system called KeyChest, and is not involved in the Wal-Mart offer.

The service makes Wal-Mart part of the fledgling UltraViolet system for storing online movies. Several of the participating studios have begun to release new titles with the functionality, which allows purchased movies to be viewed through the Flixster online movie application. Fox has delayed introducing new titles on the UltraViolet standard until improvements are made.

U.S. new car gas mileage up 20 percent since 2007: study

Tue Apr 10, 2012 11:12am EDT

(Reuters) - New cars and trucks sold in the United States are getting an average of 24 miles per gallon of gasoline, the highest ever, researchers at the University of Michigan said on Tuesday.

The average fuel economy rating as shown by window stickers on new vehicles bought in March - including pickup trucks, SUVs, minivans and passenger cars - was 24.1 mpg, the researchers found. That was up 20 percent from the average of 20 mpg in October 2007, they said.

The university's Transportation Research Institute began monthly updates on fuel economy four-and-a-half years ago.

The researchers also said that their index measuring polluting greenhouse gas emissions per new vehicle has fallen by 17 percent since October 2007.

More exercise can help older diabetics | News Center | Wake Forest ...

Published: ? April 4, 2012

By Stephanie Skordas Office of Communications and External Relations

Jack Rejeski

Research by a Wake Forest professor and his colleagues could help adults with type 2 diabetes from becoming physically disabled. Jack Rejeski, Thurman D. Kitchen professor of health and exercise science, says that weight loss and increased physical fitness nearly halved the decline in mobility in overweight or obese adults with type 2 diabetes.

Rejeski is lead author of a study published March 29 in the New England Journal of Medicine, part of a trial funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The Look AHEAD (Action for Health in Diabetes) Study followed 5,000 type 2 diabetes patients for four years, all of them between the ages of 45 and 74.

And how much weight did study participants have to lose? The research team calculated that a one percent drop in weight cut the risk of mobility problems by more than seven percent. They encouraged participants in one group to lose more than seven percent of their body weight through eat-smart strategies, diet plans, and meal replacements ? among other techniques ? and to exercise at least 180 minutes per week, primarily by walking.

After four years, the participants in this group had reduced their risk of mobility-related disability by 48 percent, results not seen in the group that focused on diabetes support and education only.

?Reduced mobility is a major cause of older adults losing their independence,? Rejeski says.

Nearly two-thirds of the group reported mild, moderate or severe restrictions in their mobility when Look AHEAD began, a rate that is double what is typically seen in adults of this age without type 2 diabetes.

Solid Tips To Any Home Improvement Job | The ... - Energy Efficiency

Look for low levels around your property, paying special attention to the areas around your home?s foundation. Any area that would allow water to pool up or run through the area must be filled with soil and compacted as well as possible to prevent damage to your yard. Dig away fro your foundation so that it does not get into your home and cause damage.

Radiant heating is inexpensive and easy once you know the correct procedures. If you are considering replacing existing floors with tile anyway, ask about putting in radiant heat. This is a great way to keep your house warm and save on money. When you are ready to sell your home, this will be an attractive feature for potential buyers.

Think of the paint before you do anything else in the room. If you are planning on installing new floors, do any painting first. No matter how careful you are with drop cloths and tarps when painting, someone involved will get some on the floor.

Use a type of bold print in a average or low key living room to add some personality. Try a zebra, leopard, or any other printed pillow or rug that interests you to add some excitement and color to the room.

Another way to make your home safe is to pad the corners of furniture if it is sharp. Most hardware stores carry a variety of foam or rubber products designed to protect those corners and keep them from hurting others. Make sure, too, that you remove a potential tripping and strangling hazard for your children by taping down all loose wires.

If you are adding exterior lights to your outdoor spaces, think about adding motion detector lights. Motion sensor lights make your home more secure because they light up when potential criminals enter the property. Because these lights aren?t on all night, they?ll also reduce your electricity bill.

An air conditioner may stick out like a sore thumb in your garden decor, but it is a much needed appliance in many climate regions. Wooden trellises or a length of lattice be great to provide camouflage for your unsightly AC unit. You can also use an ornamental grass, like pampas grass, if you about an empty foot of space in between the unit?s edge and the roots.

When you are thinking about your plans to improve your home, think about how much water you use. Some of these projects include installing water-conserving shower heads, water heaters and low-flow toilets. Updating fixtures and appliances to more efficient ones not only improves the value of your home but it looks more attractive too.

If your gutters are clogged, it can lead to drainage issues, especially when you are in the middle of a rainy summer. Clogged gutters will overflow down the sides of your home and can even cause water to seep into your basement. To prevent this, clean your gutters regularly.

Stucco is a wonderful alternative when replacing siding on the exterior of your house. While easy to install, there may be installation forms and professional help needed, but it will be worth the longevity in your home.

Prioritize exterior repairs, such as roofing and painting, over interior work, such as plumbing and carpeting, if your main home improvement goal is to fix the house up for sale. Fix the problems you can see before you fix the problems you can?t like plumbing or insulation, as this will increase the curb value.

Apply these tips to your next home improvement project. With the right amount of work, you can turn your house into a place that feels quite personal. Don?t let improving your home feel like a chore, make it into a hobby. That way you?re both saving money and having fun.

Edge on Mexico - The Deadly and Growing Mexican Pre-Electoral Syndrome

Call it the Michoacan Plus Syndrome. Exposed during last fall?s elections in the Mexican state of Michoacan, kidnappings and other crimes against actual or potential political candidates are now surfacing in Mexico?s state and federal elections scheduled for July 1.

In a recent meeting with the Interior Ministry, leaders of the Progressive Movement coalition denounced violent attacks and threats against their members and candidates in seven of Mexico?s states including Quintana Roo, Guerrero, Durango, Nuevo Leon, Jalisco, Morelos and Michoacan. Made up of the PRD, Labor and Citizen Movement parties, the Progressive Movement is running former Mexico City mayor and 2006 presidential candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador for president.

Together with Manuel Camacho Solis of the Dialogue for the Reconstruction of Mexico, Progressive Movement leaders Jesus Zambrano, Ricardo Monreal and Luis Walton laid out details of attacks and threats against their candidates in a meeting with Interior Minister Alejandro Poire, according to Mexican media.

Reportedly, a candidate was forced to withdraw from competition in Quintana Roo after a family member was kidnapped and released only on the condition that the contender drop out of the race. A similar incident was also reported in Nuevo Leon, a northern border state wracked by fighting between organized crime groups. In Nuevo Leon, a new form of electoral intimidation was revealed when candidates for state and federal offices received messages demanding protection fees in return for not blockading public events. The candidates involved in the various incidents denounced by the Progressive Movement were not publicly identified.

In Guerrero, two candidates are reported missing after receiving death threats. Several criminal bands are engaged in a no-holds-barred struggle for the narcotics trade and other rackets in sections of the southern state.

Progressive Movement politicians apparently aren?t the only ones targeted for pressure. In March, the leader of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) in Coyuca de Catalan, Guerrero, Nabor Bailon Baltazar, went missing along with Francisco Chavez Araujo, a former mayor of the violence-ridden town. Mysteriously vanished while on a trip to the state capital to register Bailon as a mayoral primary candidate, the two men later turned up safe and sound.

Although federal and state authorities have touted the joint Operation Safe Guerrero as bringing stability to the state, suspected bouts of narco-violence continue to rage in some places. For instance, at least six people were murdered in Acapulco on Thursday, March 29.

Killings in the old tourist city mounted even as the Holy Week-Easter holiday season loomed. PRI leaders plan to request a meeting with Guerrero Governor Angel Aguirre to discuss the security situation as it pertains to the elections.

Earlier this month, the coordinator of Lopez Obrador?s Morena organization was shot dead in front of his family in the municipality of Atoyac de Alvarez, Guerrero, one of Mexico?s prime opium poppy growing regions. Jose Guadalupe Pineda, who was also known as ?The Baron of Cacalutla,? had held different posts with the PRD and was the leader of the Costa Grande Religious Council.

Violent attacks against individuals associated with political parties were also chalked up in the north during the month of March. Jesus Jaime Gamez Gomez, PRI city councilor in Ciudad Obregon, Sonora, and a primary candidate for the state congress, was shot and wounded in an attack that took place in his city.

On March 24, two women teachers and members of Esther Elba Gordillo?s National Alliance Party (Panal) were gunned down at a Chihuahua City bar while in the company of two young men, who were also slain.

Killed in the attack were 42-year-old Nora Edith Rascon Saenz and 24-year-old Mara Ileana Cardona Hinojos. Rascon had been a Panal candidate for the federal legislature in 2009. A state government employee, she also served as Panal?s local coordinator of women. It?s not publicly known if politics or other motives were behind the slayings.

Also in March, the body of a missing National Action Party (PAN) legislator-elect was among 13 victims exhumed from clandestine graves scattered around Durango. A former mayor of Tepehuanes, Alfonso Pena Pena disappeared only three weeks after being elected to office in July 2010.

In a speech to the special election crimes division of the Mexican federal attorney general?s office (PGR), the head of the institution charged with organizing the July 1 presidential and congressional elections acknowledged that insecurity was jeopardizing democracy.

Leonardo Valdes Zurita, president of the Federal Electoral Institute (IFE), said democracy was only viable in a legal environment that gives ?certainty? to the overall process. Valdes said threats existed to the ?social pact? which emerged in Mexico during the transition from the PRI?s long era of one-party rule. ?The existence of insecure zones in some regions of the country hurts social harmony and could eventually inhibit the development of democratic life,? Valdes warned. Valdes said security agencies had an important role in assuring the safety of candidates as well as the unencumbered participation of the citizenry in the political process. ?We Mexicans want democracy with freedom, and to vote in peace,? he added.

Separately, Interior Ministry Poire said one of the most important challenges of 2012 was to ?avoid any infiltration of organized crime and delinquency in the electoral processes.? Valdes? comments came at an event attended by Imelda Calvillo Tello, the new head of the PGR?s election crimes investigative unit.

Calvillo?s February appointment to the critical job- less than five months before the elections- sparked polemics and criticisms from the PRI and PRD parties. A 24-year veteran of the PGR, the controversial law enforcement official has worked on money laundering matters but is not known to have any special experience with probing the labyrinth of electoral crimes that are committed in Mexico.

The incidents conveyed to Poire during his meeting with Progressive Movement leaders recalled numerous, earlier complaints that emanated from last November?s Michoacan state election. The highly-contested race for governor narrowed to a bitter battle between Fausto Vallejo of the PRI and the PAN?s Maria Luisa ?Cocoa? Calderon, President Felipe Calderon?s sister.

Despite widespread claims of fraud, violence and intimidation, Mexican legal authorities cleared the path for Vallejo to assume the governorship in February. Not unlike the disputed 2006 presidential election that was legally tipped in favor of Felipe Calderon, the federal electoral court (TEPJF) came down on Vallejo?s side.

In a unanimous decision, the judges rejected a challenge filed by the PRD, PAN and Panal parties that claimed the election was manipulated to Vallejo?s benefit by organized crime and episodes of violence, such as the murder of La Piedad Mayor Ricardo Guzman. Ruling that the charges were ?unfounded,? the TEPJF determined that the election challengers lacked sufficient proof to annul the results. ?Unfortunately, insecurity has taken the national territory hostage, in some places with greater intensity? said TEPFJ Judge Flavio Galvan. ?Nonetheless, there have been elections.?

On the other hand, election authorities ordered a July 1 rematch in the challenged contest for mayor of Morelia, the capital of Michoacan and the state?s most important city. That decision was based on alleged media violations during the campaigning.

Progressive Movement leaders Jesus Zambrano and Ricardo Monreal blasted the decision upholding Vallejo?s victory, but other PRD leaders, the PAN and rival candidate ?Cocoa? Calderon accepted the court?s decision. Calderon then went on to gain a senatorial candidacy for the PAN, and to coordinate her conservative party?s political work for this year?s elections in Michoacan. In the 2011 state election, the PRI had filed a legal complaint with the PGR that accused Calderon of buying votes to win the PAN gubernatorial nomination. Finally seated as governor, Vallejo called for peace, reconciliation and a crusade ?for security and against delinquency.?

In the border city of Reynosa, Tamaulipas, meanwhile, the specter of narco disruption resurfaced on March 29, one day before the second leg of Mexico?s federal election process commenced. Reminiscent of episodes from more than two years ago when war erupted between the Zetas and Gulf cartels, groups of people transported from poor neighborhoods blockaded Reynosa?s main thoroughfares and an international bridge leading to the United States. Alleging rampant human rights abuses by the military, the shadowy protesters demanded the Mexican army leave Reynosa.

Syria conference: Gulf countries to fund rebels

ISTANBUL (AP) ? An international coalition said Sunday that it will provide funding and communications equipment to Syrian rebels and opposition activists, reflecting a shift toward military options that might oust Syrian President Bashar Assad after a year of failed diplomacy aimed at stopping his crackdown on dissent.

Participants at a meeting on Syria, held in Istanbul, said Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries are creating a multimillion-dollar fund to pay members of the rebel Free Syrian Army and soldiers who defect from the regime and join opposition ranks. One delegate described the fund as a "pot of gold" to undermine Assad's army.

In addition, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said the United States is providing communications equipment to help opposition members in Syria organize, remain in contact with the outside world and evade regime attacks.

"We are discussing with our international partners how best to expand this support," Clinton said.

The large-scale plan by Gulf countries to help Syria's badly overmatched rebels offers a solution to the international divide over whether to arm the rebels or support them through only non-lethal or humanitarian means. It also reflects frustration with appeals to Assad to stop his crackdown on dissent, as well as hopes of forcing his ouster by shifting the military balance on the ground.

Conference participants confirmed the Gulf plan on condition of anonymity because details were still being worked out. It was unclear how the fund would be set up and monitored, or how the money, allegedly earmarked for salaries, would be guaranteed. A participant said the fund would involve millions of dollars every month.

The Saudis and other Arab Gulf states have proposed giving weapons to the rebels, while the U.S. and other allies, including Turkey, have balked out of fear of fueling an all-out civil war. Washington hasn't taken any public position on the fund, but it appears that it has given tacit support to its Arab allies.

The salaries would aim to entice reluctant servicemen in Assad's military to break ranks and join the insurgency. With Syria's economy in a spiral, the Syrian opposition and U.S. and Arab officials hope soldiers will desert in large numbers and accelerate the downfall of the Assad regime.

At the meeting in Istanbul, delegates from dozens of countries also sought to increase pressure on Assad by pushing for tighter sanctions and increased diplomatic pressure, while urging the opposition to offer a democratic alternative to his regime.

Yet the show of solidarity at the "Friends of the Syrian People" conference was marred by the absence of China, Russia and Iran ? key supporters of Assad who disagree with Western and Arab allies over how to stop the bloodshed. A peace plan by U.N.-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan has so far failed to take hold amid fresh reports of deadly violence.

"The Syrian regime should not be allowed at any cost to manipulate this plan to gain time," Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in an opening address.

Erdogan also indicated military options might have to be considered, if Syria does not cooperate with Annan's plan and the U.N. Security Council fails to unite in opposition to Assad. He referred to the vetoes of U.N. censure of Assad by Russia and China, which fear the measures could lead to foreign military intervention.

"If the U.N. Security Council fails once again to bring about its historic responsibility, there will be no other choice than to support the Syrian people's right to self-defense," Erdogan said.

Clinton also expressed skepticism that the Syrian government would observe Annan's plans, which call for an immediate cease-fire and a Syrian-led negotiation process.

"Nearly a week has gone by, and we have to conclude that the regime is adding to its long list of broken promises," Clinton said. "The world must judge Assad by what he does, not by what he says. And we cannot sit back and wait any longer."

Clinton urged unity behind a plan that includes more sanctions, humanitarian aid, support for the opposition and the promise of justice one day for regime figures involved in atrocities.

Burhan Ghalioun, leader of the opposition Syrian National Council, called for the strengthening of Syrian rebel forces as well as "security corridors" inside Syria, a reference to internationally protected zones on Syrian territory that would allow the delivery of aid to civilians. However, the nations meeting in Istanbul have so far failed to agree on such an intervention, which could involve the risky deployment of foreign security forces.

"No one should allow this regime to feel at ease or to feel stronger by giving them a longer maneuvering area," he said, reflecting fears that Assad would try to use the Annan plan to prolong his tenure. "It's enough that the international community has flirted with the regime in Syria. Something has to change."

In a statement, the Syrian National Council said weapons supplies to the opposition were not "our preferred option" because of the risk they could escalate the killing of civilians, but it appealed for technical equipment to help rebels coordinate.

"For these supplies to be sent, neighboring countries need to allow for the transfer via their sea ports and across borders," the council said.

The one-day meeting followed an inaugural forum in Tunisia in February. Since then, Syrian opposition figures have tried to convince international sponsors that they can overcome their differences and shape the future of a country whose autocratic regime has long denied the free exchange of ideas.

Syria blasted the conference, calling it part of an international conspiracy to kill Syrians and weaken the country.

A front-page editorial in the official Al-Baath newspaper called it a "regional and international scramble to search for ways to kill more Syrians, sabotage their society and state, and move toward the broad objective of weakening Syria."

In Istanbul, police used tear gas and batons to disperse a group of about 40 Assad supporters who tried to approach the conference building. Many held portraits of the Syrian leader. One man waved Chinese and Russian flags.

The delivery of humanitarian aid to Syria's beleaguered civilians is a key provision of Annan's plan. Clinton announced $12 million in additional aid for Syria's people ? doubling the total American assistance so far. Germany, whose foreign minister, Guido Westerwelle, attended the Istanbul meeting, said it was nearly doubling its humanitarian contributions to ?5.7 million ($7.6 million).

But a comprehensive solution did not appear imminent without the cooperation of the Syrian government, whose military assaults on towns and cities have forced hundreds of thousands of people to flee their homes. Syrian rebels, including army defectors, are fighting regime forces, but have been unable to consolidate their hold on territory because they are heavily outgunned.

Tens of thousands of Syrian refugees have fled to neighboring Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan, and Turkey has floated the idea of establishing a buffer zone inside Syria, if the flow of displaced people onto its territory becomes overwhelming. There are concerns that foreign intervention, even if it has a humanitarian goal, could widen the conflict by dragging in other countries and triggering a surge in sectarian tensions.

The United Nations estimates more than 9,000 people have been killed since the uprising to oust Assad began a year ago.
